Strange Laws That Still Exist Today

Visit here

Every country has its own set of rules, but some legal systems have kept old laws on the books that sound completely ridiculous in the modern world. From protecting social animals to birthday requirements, here are five of the strangest laws still in effect.

  • It Is Illegal to Own Just One Guinea Pig in Switzerland: Because guinea pigs are highly social creatures that get lonely and depressed without a companion, the Swiss government considers it animal cruelty to keep only one. If one of your pair dies, you must get a new friend for the survivor immediately.
  • Forgetting Your Wife’s Birthday is a Crime in Samoa: In this Pacific island nation, it is officially against the law for a husband to forget his wife’s birthday. If a wife complains to the police, the husband may have to pay a fine or even spend a short time in lockup to reflect on his mistake.
  • No High Heels at Ancient Greek Sites: If you are planning to visit the Acropolis or other ancient monuments in Greece, leave your stilettos at home. High heels are banned because the sharp pressure from the heels can scratch and erode the ancient stones that have survived for thousands of years.
  • Chewing Gum is Restricted in Singapore: To keep the city clean, Singapore famously banned the import and sale of chewing gum in 1992. Today, you can only buy nicotine or dental gum from a pharmacist with a prescription, and spitting gum on the street carries a very heavy fine.
  • It is Illegal to Run Out of Gas on the German Autobahn: While there is no speed limit on many parts of this famous highway, stopping for any reason other than an emergency is strictly forbidden. Running out of fuel is seen as a preventable human error, and you can be fined for endangering other drivers.
