Behind the magic of the big screen, filmmakers use incredible creativity and strange tricks to bring stories to life. Sometimes, the most iconic moments in cinema were made using the most unexpected methods. Here are five secrets from the world of movies.

  • Darth Vader’s Breathing was a Scuba Tank: One of the most terrifying sounds in cinema history was actually quite simple. Sound designer Ben Burtt created Darth Vader’s iconic breathing by placing a microphone inside a scuba regulator and recording the sound of him breathing through it.
  • The Lion King Roars Were Not Lions: Real lion roars are actually a bit too quiet and deep for what the filmmakers wanted. Instead, the roars in the movie were performed by a voice actor growling into a metal trash can to create that powerful, booming echo.
  • ET’s Voice Came from a Real Person: The voice of the famous alien was provided by Pat Welsh, an elderly woman who smoked two packs of cigarettes a day. Her naturally raspy voice gave ET that unique, otherworldly sound without needing much digital editing.
  • Real Snow in The Wizard of Oz Was Asbestos: In the famous poppy field scene, the snow falling on the characters was actually 100 percent industrial-grade asbestos. At the time, it was a common material used for fake snow because it was fireproof, though people didn’t know yet how dangerous it was.
  • Toy Story was a Historical First: Released in 1995, Toy Story was the first-ever feature-length film to be entirely computer-animated. Before this, animation was done by hand-drawing thousands of individual frames on transparent sheets called cels.
