Incredible Facts About the Earth’s Oceans
Even though we live on a blue planet, we have explored less than ten percent of the vast world beneath the waves. The ocean is home to mountains taller than Everest and pressure that would crush a car. Here are five incredible facts about the deep blue.
- There is More Gold in the Ocean Than in All Banks: There are about 20 million tons of gold dissolved in the world’s ocean water. However, it is so diluted that it is currently impossible to mine. If we could get it all out, every person on Earth would have about nine pounds of gold.
- The World’s Tallest Waterfall is Underwater: Most people think of Angel Falls in Venezuela, but the largest waterfall is actually under the Denmark Strait. Cold water from the Nordic seas sinks below warmer water, creating a massive underwater drop of 11,500 feet.
- We Have Better Maps of Mars Than the Ocean Floor: Because water blocks satellite signals, it is incredibly difficult to map the bottom of the sea. We have high-resolution maps of the entire surface of Mars and the Moon, but most of our ocean floor remains a mystery.
- The Deepest Point is Home to Plastic: The Mariana Trench is nearly 7 miles deep, yet even at the very bottom, researchers have found plastic bags and candy wrappers. It shows that human impact reaches even the most remote places on the planet.
- Oceans Provide Most of Your Oxygen: You might think trees are our main source of air, but at least 50 percent of the world’s oxygen is produced by phytoplankton. These tiny marine plants drift near the surface and photosynthesize just like land plants.
