The Fascinating World of Insects

Visit here

Insects make up the vast majority of all animal species on Earth. While many people see them as pests, they are actually tiny biological marvels with abilities that put human technology to shame. Here are five fascinating facts about the insect world.

  • Dragonflies are the Ultimate Hunters: While lions and sharks are famous predators, dragonflies are far more successful. They catch about 95 percent of the prey they target, thanks to their ability to move each of their four wings independently and predict the movement of their target.
  • Ants Don’t Have Lungs: Instead of breathing through a mouth or nose, ants take in oxygen through tiny holes all over their bodies called spiracles. They also don’t have ears; they feel vibrations from the ground through their feet to sense movement and danger.
  • Bees Can Recognize Human Faces: Honeybees have been trained to identify and remember specific human faces. Researchers found that they use the same method we do—taking individual features like eyes and lips and combining them into a recognizable pattern.
  • The Strength of a Dung Beetle: Relative to its body weight, the horned dung beetle is the strongest insect in the world. It can pull a load that is 1,141 times its own body weight. To put that in perspective, that would be like a human pulling six double-decker buses at once.
  • Cockroaches Can Live Without a Head: Because they have an open circulatory system and breathe through small holes in their body segments, a cockroach can survive for up to a week without its head. It only eventually dies because it cannot drink water and dies of thirst.
